Building my skills with Firearms training

At the start of 2024, I created a plan to build up my skill sets for roles that I want to play as an actor. ✨

I’ve played detectives and cops in the past, but after seeing Mare of Eastown, I knew I really wanted to dig my teeth more into roles like that.

I’ve worked with prop guns before, but I wanted to have the experience of holding and firing a real gun. I wanted to learn protocols, safety procedures, how to draw a gun, replace the magazine, the whole deal.

Last weekend, I took a 3-hour beginner handgun class at @americandefenseenterprises. Located in Azusa in Burro Canyon Shooting Park, it’s an outdoor shooting range.

I was definitely nervous to shoot a 9mm for the first time. And I’m so grateful that this place has a 100% safety rating. They also train Navy Seals, FBI and cops. Yeah. They are the real deal. 😎

I freakin’ loved it. The staff was absolutely incredible. They were thorough, patient and tough. I learned so much. What a difference in holding a real weapon versus a prop.

I wish I had photos of me in the gear and firing at targets in the shooting house, but as I said, they’re safety measures were intense.

💙 I had two female trainers in my small group, Paula and Katie. These women were grounded, calm badasses. I never knew how calm you had to be to fire a weapon. So grateful they were my mentors, I will definitely be back.

I do feel changed by the experience. I haven’t been able to articulate exactly why yet. It was a bigger experience for me than I anticipated.

I’m proud of myself for getting outside of my comfort zone. Looking forward to continuing the journey….
